CANON: The Dark is Rising Sequence
CANON-POINT: Immediately post series

DOSSIER

HISTORY:
Will first awoke to his true power and heritage on his eleventh birthday. On that day he met a man named Merriman and a woman known only as the Lady, and he learned that he was the last of the Old Ones of the Light. Will learned that he had a gift, one that the very law of the universe demanded that he serve and one that he could not refuse. And that he was bound by his very nature to fight against the Dark. They told Will that with his awakening they knew that the time of the last great battle against the Dark was drawing near.

His first quest would be to reunite six signs of power that had been created by the Light over the ages. Over the week of Christmas Will sought out the six signs and reunited them while coming into his power and  fighting off obstacles created by the Dark.  With the signs reunited, Will called forth Herne the Hunter and the Wild Hunt to chase the Dark to the edges of the Earth.

The next summer Will traveled to Cornwall. There he assisted Merriman and three human children in the recovery of a stolen Grail and a lost manuscript. Will and Merriman used the artifacts to decipher a coded prophecy in Ogam on the side of the Grail.

Only a few months later Will became desperately ill with hepatitis. He lived, but at the cost of all his memories of his life as an Old One. He was left with only a few scraps of verse, instincts he couldn't understand, and the desperate knowledge that he had lost something more important than his own life.

Will's family sent him Wales to recuperate, and he spent a few days slowly wandering the hills searching for what he had lost. There, he met a white-haired and golden-eyed boy named Bran and remembered everything. Together the two boys would embark on a quest to find a golden harp and wake the seven sleepers. By the end of the adventure Bran's heritage as the son of King Arthur was revealed. And Will acknowledged his own duty to serve Bran just as Merlin had served King Arthur.

A year later Will returned to Wales. Along with Bran and the three children from Trewessick they fought the Dark in one last battle. They won and the Dark was cast out beyond time. But with the victory came a great cost. The great work of the Old Ones had ended and it was time for them to leave. Bran was given the choice to come live with his father, Arthur, but he chose to forget and live a mortal life. And Will's last task was to remain in the mortal world as the last watchman for his kind.

As the Old Ones sailed away, Merriman removed all memories of the great battle and magic from everyone's minds. Only Will remembered.

Will is an Old One, a member of a race of magical beings created from one of two main polarizing magical forces of the Universe. Old Ones are of the Light and they are bound in an eternal battle against the forces of the Dark. The Light seeks to defend humanities right to free will, while the Dark seeks to enslave humanity to the darker impulses of their own minds.

Old Ones claim to be very much like humans. They are born into human families, and live as humans do. In appearance there is no obvious difference. But in the end, they are something very different.

As an Old One, Will has access to a wide variety of powers.

  • Time Travel
    • Will is unaffected by time paradoxes.

Personality:
On the surface Will is an entirely normal boy from the English countryside. He is quiet, polite and cheerful, with a wry sense of humor. He can be distant and vague around people he does not know well, but Will often teases his family and friends with mock pompousness and a straight face. Will loves all the socializing and craziness that comes from being the youngest in a very large family. Although some of his other siblings complain about there being too many people in the house, Will never does.

Will enjoys visiting his father's small Jewelry shop in Eton, where he has been learning how to engrave gold. He also loves singing in choir and going on long bikerides through the countryside to visit old churches. He has a keen interest in things like folklore and ceremonies. Will enjoys learning about languages as well, although he likes the logic and formal structure of Latin best. He reads Medieval herbal treatises for fun, and claims to be mad for anthropology.

But at the same time there is something oddly old about Will. As if he were ancient and young all at the same time. There are times when he simply knows things. When to act and what to say. He knows things about plants and animals and stars and people. He acts more like an adult than a child. For example, he has a way of avoiding fights with other boys his age by removing himself from the argument and being annoyingly reasonable. He has a way, also, of sliding into an argument and fixing a problem diplomatically without ever bringing attention to himself. There is something subtly reassuring and practical about Will. He hardly ever gets upset about anything. And he can be rather cryptic and philosophical at times. After some comments about religion, a local priest once remarked that he wasn't sure whether Will should be ordained or exorcised.

All of these oddities are caused by the fact that Will has another, much deeper, side to his character. In truth, Will belongs to a group of metaphysical beings who call themselves Old Ones of the Light. He was the last to be born and the one with the closest ties to humanity still. Although the Light is good and noble, it is not kind. It can be very cold and pragmatic. And it can be cruel, especially to it's own kind. Old Ones are concerned with the great battle against the Dark, fighting so that humans can have the chance to make their own choices. But Old Ones themselves do not have a choice about their own destiny. Once they come into their power they are bound to serve the interests of the Light. If they are required to sacrifice a few individuals for the greater good, they will do it. For Old Ones, duty comes first. Always.

For Will, who still has ties to his human family and human emotions, the demands of being an Old One can be hard. He still feels empathy for the humans he protects, and regrets the need for sacrifices. But at the same time, the part of him that is an Old One limits his ability to to empathize with human emotions like grief. In a later book, when a friend was upset over the death of his dog, Will was only able to offer him the wisdom of an Old One. At the time Will knew that it was the wrong thing to say. That the cold pragmatism of his kind was not what his friend wanted or needed to hear. But he was unable to be human enough in that moment to be what his friend needed. Another time, Will’s mentor told him that there were parts of his abilities as an Old One he could not understand because he still thought too much like a human.

Will always carries the knowledge of his duty as an Old One in the back of his mind. But he is also determined that his two worlds should not meet too closely. The magic and danger of his life as an Old One must not touch his human family. When an enemy from the Dark crossed his family's threshold on Christmas morning Will was outraged and would have reached for words to blast him out beyond time. And he would have done it, if his family hadn't been there. But in the end, if the Light demands that he risk or sacrifice his family and close friends, Will will do it.

And this is Will's greatest conflict. He cares deeply for his family and friends, but a part of him is always aware that the bigger picture must come first.

Because of this conflict between his human and Old One sides, Will can sometimes behave in very different ways. One moment he may be cheerfully teasing his brothers, and the next he'll be sagely dispensing advice with the wisdom of an old man. But both sides are the same Will. He is one boy with two mindsets. There is the Old One that is Will, and there is the small boy who is Will. Both are the same. But in Will's daily life as the youngest child in the Stanton clan there is no need for the power and authority of the Old Ones. And so, that part of him that carries the ageless wisdom of his kind can sleep. And when there is need for the Old One , he can awaken once more.

Bit of an unusual day so far, isn't it?  The whole thing has been rather strange. [He grins suddenly.] But I think its a bit marvelous as well. After all, it isn't every day one has has the chance to see such a library as this.

It is certainly far grander than any place I ever saw back home.

[He trails off in thought for a moment.]

Ah, but I suppose I've been rude in not introducing myself. I am Will Stanton.

Will knew better than most that the forgotten places of the world held many wonders that had been lost. He had traveled to some of them. He had walked through the Lost Land, drowned beneath the waves many centuries before his own birth, and he had stepped through the Door of the Birds. He had entered the realm of Tethys beneath the ocean, and walked through Caerleon in the days of the Romans.

But he had never seen a place such as this.

Perhaps in any other situation he would not have minded visiting such a place. Will happened to be very fond of books, and he had never seen so many in one place before. Not even in the library in London that he had once visited on a school trip.

But as it was, Will could only feel a keen sense of disappointment. Only a few minutes before he had arrived here, he had finally had hopes that the war he had been fighting ever since his eleventh birthday had finally been over.  They had won. The Dark had been cast out beyond all time. For a moment, just a moment, he had hoped to see the world as it had been meant to be, free of the influence of the Dark. Even if it meant taking up his new task as the Watchman as everything else of magic faded away.

But if he had been sent away so soon....

Will knew that he would not be here if the Light had not seen a need for it. And that meant that something must have gone terribly wrong.

Within the LIbrary he can:
  • Speak into others minds and receive messages in return. For game purposes he can only speak in this way with others who have the same ability.
  • Have visions of the past
  • Speak and understand all languages that exist in his world.
  • Speak and understand a magical language known as the Old Speech which can be understood by all creatures of magic in his world.
  • Immortality. Will can be injured, but he is unable to die.
  • Sense the presence of the Dark. Not sure yet how this will be applied in RP. Related to this, Will himself is of the Light. In his canon the Light and the Dark are two poles of magical power within the universe.
Outside of the LIbrary he can:
  • Slip through time (although it is unlikely this will ever be used)
    • Will is only loosely connected to time. In canon he often slips through to other times.
  • Step outside of time or put others outside of time for a moment
  • Cast spells to control fire and water, air and sky
  • Cast spells to give himself the ability to swim like a fish, run like a deer and fly like an eagle

So it would really help me out if you could answer these questions for your characters.

Setting Concepts:

Old Ones: Old Ones are born into human families, and live the first part of their lives as humans. But ultimately their fate and purpose are something very different. They are immortal creature of magic and wisdom, created with the purpose of serving the Light. They exist outside of time, and have many abilities in magic. Merlin was the first of the Old Ones, and Will is the last.

Magic: Magic in this world is the force that holds the universe together. It is divided into several kinds, which all have their own function and operate together in a very complicated system of checks and balances.

High Magic: This is the highest form of magic. It is the magic that holds the universe together and keeps the stars and planets moving in their places. It also served as the ultimate authority and judge for all lesser forms of magic. Creatures of the other magics can appeal to the High Magic to decide disputes. Occasionally humans can take a role in the High Magic. King Arthur is one of these.

The Light and The Dark:
Directly beneath the High Magic are two poles of magic. The Light and the Dark. The cold white light that shines at the center of the universe, and the great dark pit as deep as the universe. Since the beginning of time the two have been engaged in a war over the future of humans. The Light seeks to preserve goodness and mercy and humanitarianism and all the things which allow men to live with each other in peace. But more than anything else, it wishes to preserve human's ability to choose their future for themselves, whether the decision be for good or ill. The Dark wants nothing more than to create a world where there is no choice for anything but the darkest sides of human nature. The Light acts through the work of the Old Ones, while the Dark acts through the Riders and through humans who have fallen and chosen the Dark of their own will.

The Wild Magic: The magic of wild places and living things. It likes neither the Light nor the Dark, and is not very fond of humans.

The Old Speech:
A language which all Old Ones instinctively know how to speak on the day they come into their power. It can be understood by all creatures of magic, and is used to cast spells.

Items of Power: Throughout history, the Light has commissioned a number of magical items, and then hid them until they were needed. As the last of the Old Ones, it was Will's job to go questing after them.

The Pendragon:
In this world, Arthur had a son. For his own safety he was sent forward to the twentieth century where he grew up as a normal boy. Just as Merlin had once served Arthur, it was part of Will's duties to serve Bran. They became close friends.

His eyes are grey, with an odd look of oldness to them. Will's face is round and good-natured, but he maintains a solemn or stoic expression most of the time.

Just above his right wrist, on the inside of his arm, Will has a single unusual scar. It looks like a shiny hairless burn scar, but is in the shape of a perfect circle quartered by a cross. He has a noticeable mannerism of pushing his bangs out of his eyes with one hand.

Will was confused.

It wasn't that he'd suddenly found himself in another place. It was a rather odd turn of events, but somehow Will couldn't find it in himself to be surprised. He had spent much of the last two years stepping into other times and places. To the Lost Land, and the Dark Ages, and the time of Arthur, to Caerleon in Roman times and to Wales and Cornwall in the present.

When one wasn't properly a part of time, such things could only be expected. He hadn't expected to find his way to such a large turtle, but there were many strange things hidden even in the lost places of his own world. It must be even more the case in other worlds.

But for the most part, Will found himself feeling disappointed. They had been fighting the last battle in Wales. They had won. The Dark had been cast out beyond all time.

For a moment, just a moment, he had hoped to see the world free of the influence of the Dark. Even if it had meant that the Old Ones and everything of magic would be forgotten, he had wanted to see it.

But if he had been sent away so soon after the last battle against the Dark, it must be because something had gone wrong. It must be because there was some task here he was needed for, so much sooner than any of them had hoped.

In his line of responsibilities, there were very few coincidences.

[A small boy in a battered sheepskin jacket stares solemnly into the console. He pokes at the device, an expression of mild curiosity on his face,]

Ah, hullo? Is this thing on? Quite a strange device. Not quite like anything I remember seeing before, I think.

[Will blinks, and smiles a little foolishly.]

But then I’m getting off topic. I've only just arrived here, you see. And I thought it would be terribly rude if I didn't introduce myself. Are there many people here?

"I understand what you are saying," he said sadly. "But you misjudge us because you are a man yourself. For us there is only the duty. Like a job to be done. We are here simply to save the world from the Dark. Make no mistake, the Dark is rising, and will take the world to itself very soon if nothing stands in its way. And, if that should happen, then there would be no question ever, for anyone, either of warm charity or of cold absolute good, because nothing would exist in the world or in the hearts of men except that bottomless black pit. The charity and the mercy and the humanitarianism are for you, they are the only things by which men are able to exist with each other in peace. But in this hard case that we the Light are in we can make no use of them. We are fighting a war. We are fighting for life and death - not for our life, remember, since we cannot die. For yours."

Age: 13

Gender/Sex: Male

Appearance:

Will is described as looking completely ordinary and unremarkable. He is short and stocky, with slightly long brown hair that continually falls into his eyes.

Personality:
On the surface Will is an entirely normal boy from the English countryside. He is quiet, polite and cheerful, with a wry sense of humor. There is something subtly reassuring and practical about Will. He hardly ever gets upset about anything. He can be distant and vague around people he does not know well, but Will often teases his family and friends with mock pompousness and a straight face. He has a keen interest in folklore and history. Will reads Medieval herbal treatises for fun, enjoys anthropology, and likes to sing.

But at the same time there is something oddly old about Will. As if he were ancient and young all at the same time. There are times when he simply knows things. He can be rather cryptic and philosophical at times, and often acts more like an adult than a child.

But Old Ones themselves do not have a choice. Once they come into their power they are bound to serve the interests of the Light. If they are required to sacrifice a few individuals for the greater good, they will do it. For Old Ones, duty comes first. Always.

Abilities:
“It is a burden... Make no mistake about that. Any great gift or power or talent is a burden and this more than any, and you will long to be free of it. But there is nothing to be done. If you were born with the gift, then you must serve it, and nothing in this world or out of it may stand in the way of that service, because that is why you were born and that is the Law."

Will is an Old One, a member of a race of magical beings created from one of two main polarizing magical forces of the Universe. Old Ones are of the Light and they are bound in an eternal battle against the forces of the Dark. The Light seeks to defend humanities right to free will, while the Dark seeks to enslave humanity to their own darker impulses. The Light acts through the Old Ones while the Dark acts through humans who have sworn to serve it in return for power and immortality.

Old Ones claim to be very much like humans. They are born into human families, and live as humans do. In appearance there is no obvious difference. But in the end, they are something very different.

As an Old One, Will has access to a wide variety of powers.

Time
  • Time Travel
    • Will is unaffected by time paradoxes.
    • Old Ones exist outside of time.  For them, all time is the present.
    • Will can walk in and out of different times as he wills, and if he walks into a new time everyone there will remember him as always having been there.
    • In Arda Marred Will can no longer travel through time.
  •  Visions
    • Will sometimes has visions of other times. This happens either by walking into a space where time is overlapping or by touching an object and willing himself to see its history.
    • In Arda Marred this is limited to objects he can touch.
  • Control of Time
    • Will can stop time for the people around him or put a single person outside of time for a moment.

Mind
  • Mindspeaking
    • Will can speak into the minds of other Old Ones. He can also share mental images in this way. For Arda Marred, this ability will be limited to beings similar to himself who already possess a similar ability.
  • Memory
    • Will has an excellent memory. It is mentioned that the mind of an Old One is the safest place to leave important information, for it can never be truly forgotten.
  • Sensing
    • Will can sense the presence of other agents of the Light and Dark. He feels the Light as music and the Dark as a whirling uncomfortably disorienting feeling.
Magic
  • The Old Speech
    • All Old Ones instinctively know how to speak this language. In Will's world, all creatures of magic can speak and understand it as well. In Arda Marred this is limited to only creatures of magic from worlds where a mutually intelligible magical language already exists.
    • Will speaks and understands all the languages of men. In Arda Marred this will only work while speaking directly to characters who have already given permission.
    • Will uses the Old Speech to cast spells. Some spells can be cast with only a single word and gesture, while others are more complicated.
      • Spells to control fire and water, sea and sky.
      • Spells to use the abilities of different animals. To ride the wind like an eagle, to run like a deer and to swim like a fish.
      • Spells using the virtues of different plants and animals
      • Spells to identify and destroy the magic of the Dark
      • Spells of protection
      • Spells to use enchantment to temporarily acquire skills like horse riding and music
      • Will cannot cast spells over running water or heal using magic. It is also mentioned that there are certain things like instant transportation or seeing visions of the future that he is not capable of yet.

Immortality
  • Will cannot die. Even if he becomes badly injured, he would be unable to die.  However he is not invulnerable. He is as easy to injure as any human and has no healing ability.
  • In Arda Marred, if Will's body is ever injured to the point that he would not be able to survive, he will revert to being a pillar of light for two weeks.

Canon Summary:
Will grew up in a small village called Hunterscoombe in rural England. He was the youngest of nine children. Up until his eleventh birthday Will was very much like an ordinary child.

On the eve of his eleventh birthday Will went to sleep wishing for snow. He awoke into a time several centuries before his own, in the days when all of his village was nothing more than a clearing in a great forest. Feeling almost as if he was in a dream, Will followed a trail through his forest to a set of Great Doors standing alone on a hillside. They opened at his touch.

Inside was a great stone hall and two people waiting for him. Merriman Lyon, once called Merlin, and a birdlike old woman known only as the Lady. The two of them proceeded to tell Will of his heritage, now that he had awoken. They told Will that he was the last of the Old Ones and the first to be born in over 500 years. Will learned that he had a gift, one that the very law of the universe demanded that he serve and one that he could not refuse. And that he was bound by his very nature to fight against the Dark. They told WIll that with his awakening they knew that the time of the last great battle against the Dark was drawing near.

There was a prophecy. Merriman named WIll Signseeker and told him that his first quest would be to reunite six signs of power that had been created by the Light over the ages. One sign WIll had already received as a birthday present.

Before WIll could learn much more they were attacked by the Dark. In the ensuing battle Will’s arm was branded with the Sign of the Light and the Lady sacrificed the greatest part of her strength to drive the Dark away. With the way out freed, Merriman brought Will back to his own time. A few days later Will successfully retrieved the second sign from a man known only as the Walker.

Soon afterwards Will came to visit the village manor. To his surprise Merriman was there, posing as a butler. The two traveled to a Christmas Party in Victorian England. There, Will was brought to the Book of Gramarye. This single book contained all of the accumulated knowledge of the Old Ones. In a single moment of suspended time Will received his training and came into his full power as an Old One.

Two other important things happened at that party. Will met a man named Hawkins and he received the Sign of Wood. Hawkins was Merriman's liegeman and adopted son from the twelfth century. He was brought forward in time for that night to help break the spell guarding the Book of Gramarye. But Will also witnessed the beginning of Hawkin's fall from the Light. Furious that Merriman had risked his life to bring Will his education and jealous of the Old One's immortality Hawkins took the first step on his fall to the Dark. He would become the Walker that Will had met in his own time. As they watched the betrayal begin, Merriman told Will that he had made the greatest mistake their kind could make. For Merriman had placed more trust in Hawkins then the man had the strength to take. And with that, the two returned to Will's time.

Over the next few days Will continued to collect the signs even as the weather became colder and colder, bringing down more snow than Buckinghamshire had ever seen before.

A few days after Christmas Will discovered that the cold was a part of the Dark's power. To break the chill and save the lives of his neighbors Will helped Merriman seize the candles of Winter from the Dark. Placed in the candle-ring of the Old Ones, the candles warmed and created a flower of fire with the Sign of Fire in the center. The Sign of Water came to Will resting in the hands of a Viking King on his funeral ship, unburied in the flood that followed the warming weather. The Sign of Stone WIll retrieved from the church in his village. With all six signs reunited, Will called forth Herne the Hunter and the Wild Hunt to chase the Dark to the edges of the Earth. And that was the end of Will's first quest.

His second quest came in the summer, when Will traveled to Trewessick in Cornwall. There, seemingly by coincidence, he assisted Merriman and three human children to recover a stolen Grail and a lost manuscript. Together, the two artifacts allowed Will and Merriman to decipher a coded prophecy in Ogam on the side of the Grail.

From this, Will knew that his next task would be in Wales. But he didn't know to what efforts the Light would go to send him there. Only a few months later he became desperately ill with hepatitis. So ill, that he quite possibly could have died if not for his immortality. He lived, but at the cost of all his memories of his life as an Old One. He was left with only a few scraps of verse, instincts he couldn't understand, and the desperate knowledge that he had lost something more important than his own life.

His family sent him to a sheep farm in Wales to recuperate, and he spent a few days slowly wandering the hills searching for what he had lost. On a hillside he met a white-haired and golden-eyed boy named Bran and remembered everything. Together the two boys would embark on a quest to find a golden harp and wake the seven sleepers. By the end of the adventure Bran's heritage as the son of King Arthur was revealed. And Will acknowledged his own duty to serve Bran just as Merlin had served King Arthur.

A year later Will returned to Wales for his last and greatest quest. Along with Bran and the three children from Trewessick they found the last great object of the Light and fought the Dark in one last battle. They won and the Dark was cast out beyond time. But with the victory came a great cost. The great work of the Old Ones had ended. All of them boarded white ships to sail to the castle behind the north wind for their rest. All save two.

As an Old One, Will has certain abilities. This means that , among other things, he can:

1: Speak into others minds and receive messages in return.
2. Put pictures into others minds and receive pictures from other minds.
3. Speak and understand all languages in his world.
4. Speak and understand a magical language known as the Old Speech which can be understood by all creatures of magic in his world.
5: Sense the presence of the Dark. Will senses this was a whirling chaotic feeling that makes him feel ill.

However, his power comes with a few limitations.  He can only speak with the minds of people who share a similar ability. He can't contact anyone who doesn't have any telepathic ability.

So it would really help me out if you could answer these questions for your characters.

1: Mun Name and Contact
2. Character Name and Journal
3. Does your character have any kind of telepathic or psychic ability? If so, would it be alright for Will to contact them in this way?
4. Does your character come from a world with a commonly understood magical language? If so can Will contact them in this way?
5. Is it okay if Will understands your character's languages when interacting with them?
6. Does your character have any association with Light or Dark forces in their canon?  If so, what does their canon mean by Light or Dark? Would it be alright for Will to sense this in them?
7: Anything else? Plotting ideas?  Things I should know about your character?

Since there are very few online resources for this series, I included a short summary of my own. If you need more detail I can write a more in depth summary.

Will grew up in a small village called Hunterscoombe in rural Buckinghamshire England, the youngest child of a very large family. He was an ordinary child, even if he was thoughtful and acted rather old for his age. On the eve of his eleventh birthday he went to sleep wishing for snow. He awoke into a time several centuries before his own, in the days when all of his village was nothing more than a clearing in a great forest. Feeling almost as if he was in a dream, Will followed a trail through his forest. After a few dangerous encounters Will found his way to a set of Great Doors standing alone on a hillside. They opened at his touch.

Will walked into a great stone hall lined with tapestries. There, he found two people waiting for him. Merriman Lyon, once called Merlin, and a birdlike old woman known only as the Lady. The two of them proceeded to tell Will of his heritage, now that he had awoken. They told Will that he was the last of the Old Ones, the first to be born in over 500 years. And that with his wakening the time for the last battle was drawing near. That he had a gift, one that the very law of the universe demanded that he serve and one that he could not refuse. That he was bound by his very nature to fight against the Dark.

At first Will was certain that they must be mistaken. But after Merriman guided him through the steps of speaking into another Old One's mind and starting fires with his mind Will reluctantly accepted his heritage as an Old One.

But this first meeting was not over yet. Merriman told Will that his first quest would be to reunite the six signs of the Light and gave him the name Signseeker. The first sign Will had already been given, but now Merriman recited a prophecy about them.

"When the Dark comes rising, six shall turn it back
Three from the Circle, Three from the Track
Wood, Bronze, Iron, Water, Fire, Stone.
Five shall return and one go alone."

Iron for the birthday, Bronze carried long,
Wood from the Burning, Stone out of Song;
Fire from the candle-ring, Water from the thaw;
Six signs the circle and the grail gone before."

But before Will could ask any more questions they were attacked by the Dark. They could not enter the Great Hall, but they called out to Will in different voices, trying to persuade him to open the door. When they used his mother's voice Will nearly gave in. But before he could approach the door his hand brushed against the Iron Sign on his belt which burned in warning, branding a perfect symbol into his forearm. A circle, quartered by a cross. The Lady healed him, and then drove the Dark away. But not without sacrificing all of her strength.

For Merriman had placed more trust in Hawkins then the man had the strength to take. And with that, the two returned to Will's time.

Over the next few days Will continued to collect the signs even as the weather became colder and colder, bringing down more snow than Buckinghamshire had ever seen before. The Sign of Stone Will collected from an old church.

There, seemingly by coincidence, he assisted Merriman and three human children to recover a stolen Grail and a lost manuscript. Together, the two artifacts allowed Will and Merriman to decipher a coded prophecy in Ogam on the side of the Grail.

"On the day of the dead, when the year too dies,
Must the youngest open the oldest hills
Through the door of the birds, where the breeze breaks.
There fire shall fly from the raven boy,
And the silver eyes that see the wind,
And the light shall have the harp of gold.

By the pleasant lake the Sleepers lie,
On Cadfan’s Way where the kestrels call;
Though grim from the Grey King shadows fall,
Yet singing the golden harp shall guide
To break their sleep and bid them ride.

When light from the lost land shall return,
Six Sleepers shall ride, six Signs shall burn,
And where the midsummer tree grows tall
By Pendragon’s sword the Dark shall fall.

Y maent yr mynyddoedd yn canu,
ac y mae’r arglwyddes yn dod."

On the surface Will is an entirely normal boy from the English countryside. He is quiet, polite and cheerful, with a wry sense of humor. There is a solid sense of practicality and capability about him. A lot of the time he appears almost aggressively ordinary and unremarkable. Will’s expression stays solemn a lot of the time, but he has a rare smile that lights up his face. He has an keen interest in things like folklore and ceremonies. Will enjoys learning about languages as well, although he likes the logic and formal structure of Latin best. Will also loves all the socializing and craziness that comes from being the youngest in a very large family. He loves the moments when all of his eight older siblings are home and making noise. He often teases people he is comfortable around with mock seriousness. Sometimes he makes outrageously pompous statements aimed at getting people riled up at him. He reads Medieval herbal treatises for fun, and is fascinated by anthropology and folklore. He loves visiting his father's small Jewelry shop in Eton, where he has been learning how to engrave gold.

But at the same time there is something oddly old about Will. As if he were ancient and young all at the same time. There are times when he simply knows things. When to act and what to say. Odd thoughts about events that happened long before he was born. Things about plants and animals and stars and people.

In truth, Will belongs to a group of metaphysical beings who call themselves Old Ones.

But he was unable to be human enough to be what his friend needed. Another time, Will’s mentor told him that there were parts of his abilities as an Old One he could not understand because he still thought too much like a human.

When acting as an Old One Will is calm, serene and authoritative. Old Ones tend to be utterly unflappable and rather cold and pragmatic. They are not human, even though they may appear like ordinary people. Yet there is a sense of companionship among them. Old Ones only truly feel complete when they are in a gathering of their own kind. But because their duty to the Light will always come first, they spend most of their time alone among humans.

The important thing to know about Will is that he doesn't have a split personality or two minds or any other explanation for why he sometimes acts very different. Always, he is the same Will. It would be more accurate to say that he is one boy with two mindsets.

Will always carries the knowledge of his duty as an Old One in the back of his mind. But he is also determined that his two worlds should not meet too closely. The magic and danger of his life as an Old One must not touch his human family. When an enemy form the Dark crossed his family's threshold on Christmas morning Will was outraged and would have reached for words to blast him out beyond time. And he would have done it, if his family hadn't been there. But in the end, if the Light demands that he risk or sacrifice his family and close friends, Will will do it.

Will isn't antisocial, but he does tend to be reserved and distant. He has a few friends around the village, and he is very close to his brothers. But he makes very few close friends.

Powers/Abilities:
Will is an Old One, a member of a race of magical beings created from one of two main polarizing magical forces of the Universe. Old Ones are of the Light and they are bound in an eternal battle against the forces of the Dark. The Light seeks to defend humanities right to free will, while the Dark seeks to enslave humanity to their own darker impulses. The Light acts through the Old Ones, pieces of itself born into the World as humans, while the Dark acts through humans who have sworn to serve it in return for power and immortality.

As an Old One, Will has access to a wide variety of powers. For sake of clarity I have divided them into categories.

Time

Will is unaffected by time paradoxes. He can walk in and out of different times as he wills, and if he walks into a new time everyone there will remember him as always having been there. He can have visions of the past as well, either by walking into a time bubble or by touching an object and willing himself to see its history. He can stop time for the people around him or put a single person outside of time for a moment.

Mind

Will is telepathic only with other Old Ones and similar magical beings. He is forbidden from manipulating the minds of humans unless it is necessary to remove their memories or shield their minds for protection. He has an excellent memory. Additionally he has some ability with mental combat. He can sense the presence of other agents of the Light and Dark.

Magic

Will speaks a language called the Old Speech, which allows him to cast a variety of different spells. He also read the Book of Gramarye, which contained all of the knowledge on magic the Old Ones had collected since before the time of Arthur. Specific spells mentioned included the words to control the elements, learning to fly and swim from different animals, learning the virtues of different plants and animals and learning to walk the Old Ways.

Immortality

Will is unable to die, but he is not invulnerable. He is just as easy to hurt and heals no faster than a human. He will just be unable to die from his injuries.

Human Abilities

Will has a few human abilities outside his powers as an Old One. His father is a jeweler and has been teaching him how to engrave gold and other metals. Will has grown up on a small farm and knows quite a lot about the care of chickens and rabbits. Will is also a choirboy and is an excellent boy soprano.

Appearance:
In appearance Will is almost completely ordinary. He is short and stocky, with slightly long mouse-brown hair that continually falls into his eyes.

Mental Presence

But to those characters who have the ability to sense the supernatural, it will be obvious that Will is not so human after all. He is an Old One of the Light, and that is not only a title. Although he was born as a human and once believed himself to be only a human child, Will was also created out of one of the two primary elemental forces of his universe. Forces which, in the hierarchy of WIll's universe, lie directly beneath the power responsible for maintaining the operation of the universe.

What the Light is... well at one point a human character says this about it. But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun. ... At the centre of the Light there is a cold white flame, just as at the centre of the Dark there is a great black pit bottomless as the Universe.

Other Permissions

Will has a certain ability to tell whether someone is human or not. And more specifically, whether someone belongs to the Light or the Dark. That last won't be coming into play here, as the concept of Light and Dark in his canon doesn't really match up with any other canon's concept of Light and Dark powers.

Time

Will is unaffected by time paradoxes. He can walk in and out of different times as he wills, and if he walks into a new time everyone there will remember him as always having been there. ability with mental combat. He can sense the presence of other agents of the Light and Dark. He can also sense malevolent intentions.

Naturally, most of these will be tough to play out in game without some permissions. So please answer the following questions to help me out.

Is it okay for him to simply know whether your character is human or not?

Does your character have telepathic abilities? If so, are you willing to have them contacted in this way?

Is there any plotting you would like to do with any of his abilities?

Personality:

For yours."

Strengths and Weaknesses
Will cannot cast magic across running water. He is also severely limited by the magical laws of his kind in what he can do and how he can act. For example, he cannot do anything that would impact a human's right of free will. Many of the magical battles in his canon resemble legal battles more than anything else.

He cannot affect fairies or magical beings. The only exceptions are the spells of Mana and the spells of Reck and the spells of Lir. When cast together they can compel a magical being to come forth and listen to a single request. However, they do not compel them to grant it or to allow anyone to escape unhurt from such an encounter.

Physically he is no stronger than any other boy.

Despite all of his knowledge he is still a child emotionally. Because of this he makes mistakes and foolish decisions sometimes. He is very young for his kind, and because of that there are some things he cannot do. Because he is still close to humanity there are things about his identity as an Old One that he is still incapable of understanding.

Third Person Prose:
Will shivers slightly as he slips out the door, shoving his hands deep in his coat. It was cold, here. Not quite as cold as Mid-Winter had been this time last year. But cold enough. But no snow. For a moment Will longs wistfully for a proper thick blanket of snow to appear here in this place. The sort of snow that transformed the world and made everything look fresh and new.

Lost in thought, Will trudges through the streets. There was something wrong here. Will was certain of it. It wasn't just that he felt more lost than he could ever remember being. There was something about this city. It felt of danger in a way that the Thames Valley never had. Even in Wales he had had this feeling of familiarity, like the very stones were old friends. But here...

"It is like the world is in a different shape now," Will says slowly. He wonders at his own words. What made him say that? And why did it seem like a familiar thought?

PARADISA HISTORY:

Will originally arrived in Paradisa immediately after the conclusion of Silver on the Tree. This was a pivotal moment for him. A moment between the end of his old duty as the Signseeker and the beginning of his new duty as the Watchman.

He had just seen the end of the war he had been born to fight. In the final battle the Dark had been cast outside of time and the purpose of the Old Ones came to an end. There was no longer any need for them any more. And so they left.

Only Will remained within the world. It would be his duty now to serve as the Watchman. To watch over the world of humans as the only Old One left.

But before they left, Will's master Merriman had one last thing to do. He cast a spell to remove all knowledge of the Old Ones from the human world. All of Will's human friends forgot everything unusual about him and everything of their adventures together. Will was left alone in the world with only his duty. And a world full of family and friends who knew nothing of what he truly was.

But that was his duty, and he would not protest it. if the Light demanded it of him, then it was right. That was how Will thought. And that was when he was taken to the castle.

At first Will thought that he had been called by the Light for another task. He sought out minds with like power, and was surprised to meet others capable of speaking mind to mind. He swiftly became very confused. He became even more lost when he realized that he could no longer feel the promptings of the Light. For the first time since awaking to his true identity he did not know the right thing to do. He was on his own.

Over the next few weeks Will became desperately lonely as he fully realized how completely isolated he had become from everything he knew. He struggled with the question of what the right actions were for him now. Was it right to use his powers to protect others? Should he allow the humans of the castle to learn what he was? What was the right path?

Then the Headspace event happened. Will found himself invited to Galadriel's room. There, he learned of part of the Lady's past and shared some of his own in return. They bonded over the similarities in their stories. Of being the ones left behind as family and friends sailed away to their paradises. And this sharing gave Will a foundation to build on. He was no longer completely lost.

Over the next few months Will began to adjust to the situation in Paradisa. He made friends and began to show his child side more and more. In Paris he cheerfully took on the task of introducing certain Elves to the modern world and celebrated his birthday.

And then Will was returned home.

Will's previous stay changed him very little. For the most part he remained the same calm and dutiful boy he always was. But there were some changes. He is more open to friendships and more willing to place trust in humans.

His most likely reaction to being returned here is passive acceptance. His task here must not have been complete.

WHAT THEY ORIGINALLY LOST: Will originally lost his ability to sense what course of action the Light wished him to take. This affected him by introducing uncertainty into his decisions and forcing him to try and figure out situations in the castle for himself.

SECOND LOSS: For his secondary loss Will will lose his ability to be alone for more than three hours at a time. If he attempts to remain alone he will feel weaker and weaker as time passes. This will force him out of his hermit tendencies.

INTENT: I have really missed playing Will in Paradisa. When I dropped him before, it was before I was able to carry out a lot of the development I had originally planned. With this second chance I hope to continue helping him adjust to the consequences of his immortality and duty.
